My Place Smooth Jazz

Mike Goss

Hi, I’m Michael Goss! I’ve been hosting My Place Smooth Jazz since early 2020 and Boogie Town since around October the same year. My love for disco started way back in 1975 when I ran the Crimson Mist mobile disco—originally chauffeured around by my dad until I bought my own van in '76. But even as a kid, I had a soft spot for smooth jazz from legends like Quincy Jones (Soul Bossa Nova), Percy Faith, and Herb Alpert. These days, smooth jazz is where my heart really lies—hence, My Place!

As for my career journey? Well, let’s just say it’s been varied! I “borrowed” a couple of years to get a Saturday job at a metal workshop when I was 15, earning enough to fund my disco gear (much of it home-built). After college, I landed in the test lab at Goblin—remember the Teasmade and vacuum cleaners? Then came more college, a six-month stint in Oregon, and a role at Dolby Laboratories as a test engineer.

I eventually moved into the fire alarm industry, climbing the ladder to Department Manager overseeing all things audio-visual. At 35, I took the plunge and started my own company, Quantum Power, specializing in commercial audio, CCTV, and fire alarms. After decades of hard work, I retired about 10 years ago but still take on the occasional project that piques my interest.

Outside of music, I keep busy with volunteer work at Sanderstead United Reformed Church, the Sanderstead and Selsdon Rotary Club, and up until recently, the Selsdon Retirement Centre.

On the personal side, I was married from 1987 to 2011 and have two wonderful daughters, Joanie and Abigail. Fun fact: Abi has presented a dozen shows on Big Ear—her voice is just gorgeous! These days, I have a lovely long-term girlfriend, Kate, but I live alone, which has its perks—like working to my own schedule!
